Water is Life

Population growth, the natural variability of California precipitation, and climate change provide continuing challenges to Zone 7’s mission of providing water and flood protection

  • An effective Director needs to understand all the factors leading to these challenges

  • I have a proven record of the broad and detailed learning needed to meet new challenges

  • My experience as a scientist and project manager has taught me when and how to ask hard questions

Decisions involve assessing both technical and financial details to choose the best available option

  • My experience as a scientist, project manager, and businessman provides me with the necessary skills to make these decisions wisely

  • Good decisions require a clear definition of the objectives that involve a balance of value judgements

  • Resources are finite and must be used wisely to attain the best benefit-to-cost ratio

  • One needs to balance vision with practical realities

Residing in the Tri-Valley since 1977 has taught me about the diverse needs of water customers

  • Residences, agriculture, and businesses have different needs

  • Water retailers (DSRSD, CalWater, and the Cities of Pleasanton and Livermore) have different circumstances

  • The best decisions are made by gathering data and perspectives of the broadest range of people

  • My diverse roles in the Tri-Valley have enabled me to interact with people ranging from leaders of some of our largest employers, nonprofit leaders, the faith community, the unhoused, public officials, and winery owners
